Lessons to be learned and acted upon to protect our mental, physical well-being, we need to recognize the importance of how the green space matters, the role of gardens, the easy access of recreational public realm spaces from people’s homes. Personal space matters, too. Family homes – with gardens where possible – should form part of all developments. Whilst a few countries have been applauded, New Zealand for example has handled the crisis remarkably well, and has been named the world’s most livable city for 2021 on The Economist Intelligence Unit’s Global Liveability Index of 140 cities around the world.
The annual list did not go ahead in 2020, but Austria’s Vienna, number one in both 2018 and 2019, has completely dropped out of the top 10 after being heavily affected by Covid, and now sits in 12th place.
According to The Economist’s survey of the world’s most liveable cities, Abu Dhabi’s ranking jumped 10 positions from 73rd in 2019 to 63rd in 2021.
